Culturally Inclined, Chelsea

May 15, 2023

c “

Chelsea is a fantastic destination that I have watched transform through the decades.  You can now explore the Meatpacking Districts shops and Whitney Museum and transverse the one-of-a-kind Elevated Highline, the long-abandoned Chelsea railroad with views of the Hudson, while exploring the changing gardens and artwork exhibitions along the way to Hudson Yards. Additionally, the Elevated Highline has a new addition dubbed the “Highline – Moynihan Train Hall connector,” a pair of interconnecting 600-foot-long bridges are added to the existing High Line structure, moving east along 30th Street and then up along Dyer Avenue, through the Manhattan West public plaza and continuing to Ninth Avenue and the Moynihan Train Hall.  Pedestrians will be able to walk, unobstructed, all the way from the Meatpacking District straight to Penn Station using the Elevated Park.

Public Square and Gardens

The “Shed,” located where the High Line meets Hudson Yards, adjacent to 15 Hudson Yards, borders the Public Square and Gardens. The “Shed,” one of New York‘s most avant-garde cultural institutions, has announced the opening of Sonic Sphere. This groundbreaking new architectural space pushes the boundaries of the traditional concert hall. Created by a team of boundary-pushing architects, Sonic Sphere will be suspended midair within the Shed, soaring McCourt space from June 9th through July 7th. The sphere is a vast, 65-foot-diameter structure that features immersive 3D  sound and light explorations.

Vessel

Besides marveling at Thomas Heatherwick’s Vessel, you can have an experience of a lifetime at the Edge, the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere located at 30 Hudson Yards. Additionally, the  Rubin Museum of Art inspirations of Tibet, Bhutan, and other Asian lands, The Museum at FIT showcases fashion and designers, and ARTECHOUSE NYC is an innovative art space and destination for immersive and interactive art exhibitions whose mission is to inspire, educate, and empower others.

Along the Hudson

Along the Hudson in Chelsea are Little Island Park and Chelsea Piers (Complex includes Piers 59, 60, and 61), a major center for sports and entertainment; now, there is Pier 57 on 15th Street in Hudson River Park, between Little Island and Chelsea Piers. Access is from the West Side Highway. Market 57, a new food hall curated by the James Beard Foundation, opens this weekend, bringing new flavors to Manhattan’s west side. The market, which houses more than a dozen kiosks, is located on the ground floor of the historic Pier 57 building on the Hudson River. The new food hall is part of a massive pier restoration, which has also introduced a rooftop park, offices, and community spaces.  There will also be a beach at the Gansevoort Peninsula.

Piers Highway

Hudson River Piers north of Chelsea Piers is worth an exploration, too—Pier 62 with abundant flora. Walk west to enjoy the whimsical carousel and free California-style skatepark. Pier 63 allows for a wide-open passive green space – the largest in the Park. Pier 64 with a formal tree grove and a unique position affording views of the George Washington Bridge and Statue of Liberty.   Chelsea Waterside Park, just east of West Street, construction has begun on Phase 2 improvements at Chelsea Waterside Park. The new design includes a permanent picnic area.  Maritime history comes alive at Pier 66a. Find a surviving railroad float transfer bridge and a historical barge that’s a lively seasonal restaurant, Pier 66 Maritime (Frying Pan).  Summer on the Hudson 2023 offers Outdoor Movies, Music, Dancing, Yoga & More.

If you need some substance for your journey, stop by the  ALF Bakery, now open in Chelsea Market, and other favorite local bakeries of mine are Bourke Street, City Cakes,  Empire Cake, Fabrique, and La Bergamote.

Most Expensive Contract Signed

One Highline

One Highline is a new development in Chelsea, with the number one contract signed this past week at $28 million. The two buildings rise and twist majestically above the elevated High Line, offering condominium homes with unobstructed city and water views, each superbly executed with natural light bathing every corner.  The two buildings clad with travertine are connected by a double-height sky bridge rising 21 feet (6.4 m) from floor to ceiling – “the Bridge Lounge.”  The West Tower comprises 149 condos, while the East Tower contains the Faena Hotel and 87 condos beginning on the 11th floor.  The space between the two buildings serves as a porte-cochère and courtyard with plantings, designed by the Swiss landscape architect Enzo Enea.

According to the architect, the façade design is inspired by the punched windows of the Meatpacking District’s historic warehouses and the architecture of the surrounding West Chelsea neighborhood. Even though the façade is set on a sloping concrete exposure, each individual window remains rectangular and vertical. The windows are also accented by a thin metal frame, which helps them stand out against the surrounding stone.

“It becomes almost like a dance, or mutual courtesy, between the two towers.  Rather than ignore each other, they almost care for each other and enhance each other’s situations.” – Bjarke Ingels.

Exhibition Gregor de la Haba

De la Haba Portals to New York opening on May 11th at TwoFortyThirty in Chelsea. His new paintings are exemplary models of objects for reflection.  The paintings are natural objects taken out of everyday narrative and symbolic embodiments of the transformation of human agency, luck, and fate that movement between places and values can bestow.  De La Haba has a fascination with numbers that appear to him on the route he takes each day.

Lifestyle

Chelsea has an abundance of riches: Hudson Yards, the High Line, Chelsea Market, a solid stretch of the Hudson River Park, roughly 200 art galleries, a panoply of restaurants, and nightspots. At one time, it was a gritty industrial area dominated by factories, warehouses, breweries, and tenements.  READ MORE

Culture

The High Line—an abandoned elevated railway line transformed into a lushly landscaped public park from Gansevoort Street in Greenwich Village up to 34th Street—is probably the first attraction that comes to mind when you think of Chelsea. The neighborhood’s wealth of art galleries is a close second. While it’s impossible not to come across a gallery while strolling in Chelsea, the Chelsea Arts District, from 18th to 28th Streets between 10th and 11th Avenues, is a particular trove.  READ MORE

Shopping

Hudson Yards have been Chelsea’s buzziest shopping destination for the past few years. Luxury brands, including Cartier, Dunhill, Louis Vuitton, and Sonia Rykiel rub shoulders with crowd-pleasers such as Zara, P!Q, and Muji. But while you could easily while away a day there, Chelsea also has numerous other shops you don’t want to miss.  READ MORE

Dining

Whether you want a celebratory feast, a cheap-and-cheerful brunch, a romantic dinner, or family-friendly comfort food, you’ll find it in Chelsea. While the saying “something for everyone” has become a cliché, it applies to the Chelsea restaurant scene.  READ MORE
